A Simple Yet Meaningful Photo Restoration

A simple yet meaningful restoration

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is helping people bring their treasured memories back to life. Recently, I had the pleasure of working on a black-and-white photograph sent to me by Pat. The photo, while timeless in its monochrome charm, had started showing its age. Pat hoped I could restore it to its former glory—and I was more than happy to take on the task.

This particular restoration was straightforward but impactful. The photo bore creases, likely from years of handling and storage, which disrupted the flow of its otherwise classic appeal. My first step was to digitally repair these creases. Using precision tools, I carefully blended the damaged areas with the surrounding texture, ensuring the photograph retained its authentic look.

In addition to the creases, the image had developed a yellowish tint—a common occurrence as black-and-white photos age. While the image itself wasn’t originally colored, reversing this yellowing was key to bringing back its crisp, timeless appearance. Through tonal adjustments, I restored the clean black, white, and gray tones that define the beauty of monochrome photography.

The result was a photo that looked like it could have been printed yesterday. When I sent the finished image back to Pat, it was met with joy and appreciation—a reminder of why this work is so meaningful. Restoring photos is about more than the technical fixes; it’s about preserving the moments, emotions, and stories behind them.

Thank you, Pat, for allowing me to be part of this journey to restore a piece of your history. If you, like Pat, have a photograph in need of a little love, I’d be delighted to help breathe new life into it and ensure those cherished memories last for generations to come.

Hand Coloured Portrait Photograph

Colouring Characters

Paul got in touch looking to brighten up this photo. He supplied a great quality scan which made the process very easy. I made a quick adjustment to the levels, touched up a couple tiny marks and had a play with the sharpening before getting stuck into the hand colouring. I really love the character in this one.

Colouring Old Photos

William Daniel

William Daniel or “Bill” joined the Royal Navy and like so many others, their families are now in possession of one of these portraits. This colourisation was made from a scan of a reasonably small photo. So some work was required to sharpen and restore the image before the colour work could start.

Colours were easy to match, examples of uniform can be found all over google images. Six tones were used on the face. In all a two hour job.
